The ongoing US-Israeli strikes have a \u201csymbolic meaning in Judaism,\u201d according to CNN<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tal Shalev, a CNN reporter, says \u201cThe timing of the US and Israeli attack on Iran bears symbolic meaning in Judaism. Ahead of the upcoming Jewish holiday of Purim, worshippers read the specific portion from the Old Testament, known as Zachor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She continues by explaining that the Israelites were commanded to remember an ancient assault by Amalek and \u201ceradicate\u201d their memory once they have returned to their homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe passage from the book of Deuteronomy commands the ancient Israelites to remember an unprovoked attack by the nation of Amalek and to eradicate the memory of Amalek once the Israelites are settled in their land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe passage is read publicly before Purim to fulfil the mitzvah of remembering Amalek as Israel\u2019s archetypical enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amalek has been used as a term to describe various threats to the Jewish people and Israel over the centuries, including Hitler and the Nazis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years the term has been applied to the Iranians, who are also said to pose an existential threat to Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu viewed Iran as Amalek as far back as 2009, when the country\u2019s nuclear capacity was already a growing concern,\u201d writes<\/a> Benyamin Cohen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSince then, Iran\u2019s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has continued calls for the destruction of Israel, arming and funding terror attacks by Hezbollah and Hamas, which Netanyahu has also described as carrying on the legacy of Amalek after the Oct. 7 massacre of 1,200 people in southern Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe link between Amalek and Iran isn\u2019t just ideological \u2014 it\u2019s also geographical. The story of Purim takes place in ancient Persia which is now modern-day Iran. The story centers around Haman, a royal official who plots to exterminate the Jews. Rabbinic tradition identifies Haman as a descendant of Amalek.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And those were the exact words\u2014\u201cexistential threat\u201d\u2014used by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as he thanked the US for the latest strikes, hours ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy brothers and sisters, citizens of Israel, a short time ago, Israel and the United States embarked on an operation to remove the existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thank our great friend, President Donald Trump, for his historic leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the early targets appear to be facilities linked to the Iranian regime, including the residence of Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran\u2019s supreme leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five cities have been targeted so far: Tehran, Karaj, Kermanshah, Qom and Isfahan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump addressed the nation in an eight-minute speech and said the Iranian regime must be held accountable for its historical attacks on the US and its allies, and for its refusal to abandon its ambition to acquire nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the US will now destroy Iran\u2019s missile capabilities, its navy and its \u201cterrorist proxies\u201d in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
